Platinum Group Plating

The platinum group consists of 6 metals; platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium and iridium. As part of our electroplating services we offer three of these:

  • Platinum, being one of the rarest elements in the earth’s crust, is a top choice for plating over jewellery. Platinum’s beautiful gray-white appearance will completely transform your gold rings and jewellery.
  • Palladium is a very popular alternative to platinum due to its platinum-like appearance. It is also not as expensive as platinum yet offers outstanding durability making it an excellent alternative for jewellery and watches.
  • Rhodium is seldom used now. Due to the naturally white properties and durability of palladium there is no need for rhodium plating.

What is platinum group plating? This is simply the method of depositing a layer of platinum, palladium or rhodium onto a conductive surface. The surface is normally a conductive metal base that allows a current to be passed through it to form a complete circuit. This allows the precious metal particles in the electrolyte solution to bond with the item being plated, also referred to as the cathode.

The classification for the thickness of platinum group plating that we use is as follows:

  • The minimum thickness for this type of electroplating is equal to 0.5 microns. This is used mainly for a decorative finish on items with very little handling.
  • Heavy electroplating in the platinum group metals would be 2.5+ microns. We would normally apply between 2.5 – 5 microns dependent upon the item and its intended use. This provides a long lasting finish on high wear items such as; watches, buckles, rings, bracelets and other jewellery items.

Our specially developed platinum, palladium and rhodium plating solutions are laboratory engineered to be extremely hard wearing and durable. An electroplating thickness of just 5 microns is more than adequate on high wear items if cared for properly.
