Nickel & White Bronze Plating

Nickel

We generally use nickel for electroplating a barrier layer onto copper before applying gold. This nickel barrier prevents the diffusion of the copper atoms into the gold which over time would discolour the gold plating. Nickel is also used to provide the bright decorative barrier layer prior to chrome plating being applied on bathroom taps, car and motorcycle parts. We also use nickel plating as a final decorative finish on ornamental knifes and swords.

Nickel allergy has been a lively topic in recent years, mainly due to the introduction of cheap jewellery in which the underlying metal layer is nickel. It is estimated that approximately 10 to 12% of the female population and 6% of the male population are allergic to nickel.

The use of nickel in jewellery, and other items in close and prolonged contact with the skin, is now prohibited by The European Directive. This includes all of the following:

  • Earrings, necklaces, bracelets and chains, anklets, finger rings.
  • Watch cases, watch straps and tighteners.
  • Rivet buttons, tighteners, rivets, zippers and metal marks, when these are used in garments.

White Bronze

Its use in jewellery electroplating as an allergy free barrier layer in place of nickel is a welcome relief for all nickel allergy sufferers. We now use it as standard on all items of jewellery and watches to ensure the safety and well being of all our customers.

White bronze can also be used to provide a final decorative finish on jewellery, ornamental knifes and swords for example.
